1963 – hoy1963 – today
Deterministic laws that do not allow prediction, wholes that cannot be deduced from their parts and a universe 95% made of something we do not know.
Knowing the fundamental laws no longer guarantees understanding the world.
Varias grietas a la vezSeveral cracks at once
This rupture has no date and no hero. In 1963 the meteorologist Edward Lorenz shows that three simple, deterministic equations can produce behaviour impossible to predict: chaos theory is born. In 1972 Philip Anderson publishes “More is different”: each level of organisation has its own laws that cannot be deduced from the one below.
Meanwhile the sky grows strange. Galaxies spin too fast for the matter we can see, and in 1998 the expansion of the universe is found to be accelerating. Relativity and quantum theory, the two theories of the 20th century, still will not unite. Perhaps we are in the middle of a crisis, in Kuhn's sense.
Antes: reducir es explicarBefore: to reduce is to explain
The programme inherited from Newton and Laplace: find the ultimate pieces and the laws that govern them; the rest follows by calculation. Chemistry reduces to physics, biology to chemistry. All it takes is more computing power and more data.
El giro: caos y emergenciaThe turn: chaos and emergence
In chaotic systems a tiny error in the initial data grows until prediction becomes useless, even though the laws are exact. And in complex systems, such as a fluid, a cell or a market, patterns and structures appear that no single piece contains.
Después: todavía no lo sabemosAfter: we do not yet know
There are candidates for the coming paradigm: string theory, loop quantum gravity, information as the basis of the physical. None yet has a confirmed prediction that sets it apart. Kuhn would say that this is what a revolution looks like from inside: confusing.
Two trajectories of the Lorenz attractor starting at almost the same point. The same laws, different fates.

In 1961 Lorenz wanted to repeat a weather simulation and, to save time, entered 0.506 instead of 0.506127. When he came back with a coffee, the new forecast looked nothing like the old one. That is why weather forecasts cannot reach much beyond two weeks, however good the models.
On 4 July 2012 CERN announced the discovery of the particle predicted in 1964. It was a triumph for the Standard Model, the theory of particles, and a disappointment at the same time: no new physics appeared to point the way forward.
In 1974 Stephen Hawking combined relativity and quantum theory and concluded that black holes emit radiation and eventually vanish. What happens to the information about what fell in? That paradox is one of the thought laboratories where the missing theory is sought.

Galaxias demasiado rápidasGalaxies that spin too fast
In the 1970s Vera Rubin and Kent Ford measured the speed of stars at the edges of spiral galaxies. According to Newton and Einstein they should move slower the farther from the centre, like the outer planets. They moved just as fast. Either there is far more matter we cannot see, or gravity does not work as we think.
In 1998 two teams measuring distant supernovae expected to confirm that the expansion of the universe was slowing. They found it is accelerating. The unknown engine was called dark energy. Together, dark matter and dark energy would make up about 95% of the universe's content.
El caos no es azarChaos is not chance
A chaotic system is fully deterministic: there are no dice in its equations. Unpredictability comes from extreme sensitivity to initial conditions, which we never know with infinite precision.
Complejo no es complicadoComplex is not complicated
A watch is complicated: many parts, but it can be understood by taking it apart. A flock of birds is complex: simple rules between neighbours produce a collective shape that is in none of them.
«Oscuro» no quiere decir inventado“Dark” does not mean made up
Dark matter and dark energy are names for effects measured in many independent ways. What is unknown is what they are. It is the same situation Le Verrier faced: an unseen planet, like Neptune, or a failing law, as with Mercury?
The ability to reduce everything to simple fundamental laws does not imply the ability to start from those laws and reconstruct the universe.Philip W. Anderson · «More is different», Science (1972)Philip W. Anderson · “More is different”, Science (1972)
Anderson, who would win the Nobel in 1977, does not deny particle physics: he denies it is the only fundamental physics. At each scale, he writes, new concepts are needed, and chemistry is not just applied physics, as biology is not applied chemistry. It was a declaration of independence for condensed-matter physics.

¿Crisis o ciencia normal larga?Crisis or long normal science?
Some ask for patience: dark matter will turn up in some detector. Others, like Milgrom since 1983, propose modifying gravity. Some criticise decades of string theory for not producing a testable prediction. No one yet knows whether these anomalies are pending patches or the beginning of another world.

Since the 1990s weather services make not one forecast but dozens, with slightly different starting data, and give probabilities. Models of climate, epidemics and ecosystems apply the same lessons: the complex is studied in scenarios, not prophecies.
